JOB TITLE: Release Manager
REPORTS TO: Head of IT Operations
JOB PURPOSE
As a pivotal member of the technology team, the IT Release Manager will oversee the planning, coordination, and delivery of software releases across enterprise-scale solutions. This role ensures that all releases are delivered efficiently, securely, and in alignment with strategic product objectives, working closely with internal teams and external partners.
Initially, this role positions you adjacent to our long-term delivery partner, requiring you to operate effectively across both organisations while maintaining alignment to strategic objectives. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining a release management function within an engineering environment using modern cloud-native technologies, in expectation of transitioning to full self-sufficiency over the next two years.
A key strategic expectation is developing comprehensive technical knowledge and documentation to ensure seamless technology transfer and long-term maintainability of all solutions delivered through this partnership.
The successful candidate must demonstrate proven experience of delivering release services in a rapidly changing environment where autonomous decision-making, stakeholder management, and operational excellence are paramount.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Release Planning & Coordination
- Develop and manage detailed release plans, schedules, and calendars for multiple concurrent projects
- Coordinate release activities across development, QA, operations, and business teams
- Ensure all release deliverables meet quality, security, and compliance standards
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
- Serve as the primary point of contact for release-related matters, liaising between technical teams, business stakeholders, and external partners
- Communicate release scope, status, risks, and issues clearly to all stakeholders
- Facilitate release readiness and post-release reviews, ensuring lessons learned are captured and acted upon
Process & Governance
- Define, implement, and continuously improve release management processes, standards, and ways of working
- Maintain accurate release documentation and ensure compliance with governance frameworks
- Drive automation and efficiency in release processes using modern tools and methodologies
Risk & Issue Management
- Identify, assess, and manage risks and issues related to releases
- Escalate critical risks and coordinate resolution across teams
- Ensure robust rollback and contingency plans are in place for all releases
Delivery Excellence
- Allocate effort effectively across assigned deliverables, maintaining transparency on progress and risks
- Ensure all technical outputs comply with governance frameworks, security policies, and compliance standards
- Maintain accurate project tracking through Jira and technical documentation in Confluence
- Drive continuous improvement in delivery practices and technical quality
EXPERIENCE
Industry & Delivery Experience
- Minimum seven years’ experience in release management, software delivery, and DevSecOps environments particularly Microsoft technologies
- Experience in establishing a green field release management service is highly desirable
- Strong understanding of cloud platform architectures (Azure) and environment maintenance activities
- Experience with release automation tools, CI/CD pipelines, and version control systems
- Strong background in software house, consulting, or Insurtech environments
- Proven ability to operate effectively in distributed, multi-vendor delivery teams
- Preferred experience in financial services, insurance, or regulated industries
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
Technical Skills
- Working knowledge of modern development ecosystem with understanding of modern design patterns and deployment approaches
- Working knowledge of Azure data platforms, data lakes, and integration technologies
- Able to understand complex technical documentation, architectural diagrams, coding and data standards
Leadership & Communication
- Exceptional communication skills with ability to articulate complex technical situations to diverse audiences
- Proven ability to work autonomously while maintaining accountability to team objectives
- Strong stakeholder management skills with experience managing competing priorities and expectations
- Demonstrated capability in identifying, escalating, and resolving technical and delivery risks
- Experience maintaining quality standards across mixed teams of employees, contractors, and external suppliers
