A User Experience é a área que define a nossa experiência com a tecnologia, e o fabuloso potencial que hoje conseguimos colocar nas mãos dos utilizadores. Com a evolução tecnológica das últimas décadas, evoluíram também as formas e modalidades de interacção: voz, gestos, multi-touch, etc. Como podemos, então, aproveitar estes recursos para interagir mais “naturalmente” com a tecnologia? E como podemos também inovar na própria forma de trabalhar os projectos de UX, do design ao desenvolvimento? Bill Buxton e Arnie Lund, dois oradores mundialmente “lendários” na área de UX, juntam-se a nós para discutir estes tópicos, e apresentar-lhe as suas visões para o futuro e presente desta área.

09:30 The Nature of Natural User Interaction | Bill Buxton, Microsoft Research
As technologies evolve, so do the modalities of interaction and the associated interaction languages. What evolves far more slowly is the technology of the users. It is the latter that can provide the best guide to understanding the former.
Yes, emerging technologies make it possible to better exploit the full potential of the human. And, yes, this may result in ways of interaction that are sufficiently distinct from command-line and graphical user interfaces of the past. But by the same token, just because something uses speech, gesture, multi-touch, etc., does not inherently make it “natural.” Likewise, just because something that employs a conventional command-line interface or GUI does not necessarily make it unnatural.
The “nature” of the beast lies within some appropriate mix of user, task, technology and context. It is the intent of this talk to dive into the nature of this mix with the hope of shedding some light on its nature – light which might help illuminate some of our thinking as we approach designing future systems.

11:30 Bringing Innovation to the User Experience Design and Development Process | Arnie Lund, Microsoft Corp.
In this presentation I will be describing an approach to drive innovation in user experiences, and in the culture of teams creating those experiences. I will cover a sample of the methods and tools, and their role in creating experiences that people adopt, use and find compelling. Through the presentation I’ll be sharing a variety of projects illustrating the concepts, projects that range from platforms to applications to websites. Some of the work represents exploratory research that has turned into product, and some represents product work that was taken to the next level through the innovations incorporated into the project.

Bill Buxton | Principal Researcher, Microsoft Research
Bill Buxton is a Toronto-based scientist, designer, writer, and lecturer, who has spent 30 years focusing on human aspects of technology - especially around creative applications such as music, film and industrial design. He is Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research, Distinguished Professor of Industrial Design at the Technical University of Eindhoven, and Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at the University of Toronto. Prior to joining Microsoft, he was a researcher at Xerox PARC, a professor at the University of Toronto, Chief Scientist of Alias Research and SGI Inc., and a professional composer and performer. Bill is a co-recipient of an Academy Award for Scientific and Technical Achievement, a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery, and has been awarded honourary doctorates from the Ontario College of Art and Design, Queen’s University, and the Technical University of Eindhoven. In 2010, BusinessWeek named Bill among the World’s Most Influential Designers. Bill is passionate about the outdoors, especially mountains (summer and winter) and tripping in his birch-bark canoes.

Arnie Lund | Principal UX Lead, Microsoft Corporation
Arnie Lund has managed user experience teams at several of the leading companies in the industry, and has a passion for management and for driving innovation in design and user research practices. He is a Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), a member of the ACM SIGCHI Academy, and received the SIGCHI Lifetime Service Award in 2011. He co-chaired the CHI conferences in 1998 (Los Angeles, US) and 2008 (Florence, Italy), and served on the HFES Executive Council where he oversaw human-computer interaction standards activities. He has also served as president of the board of directors for the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE), and on the board of directors for INFINITEC (focusing on infinite potential through assistive technologies).
Arnie's book User Experience Management: Essential Skills for Leading Effective UX Teams (Morgan Kaufmann) was published in 2011, and he has published widely on R&D management. You can follow his tweets @arnielund.
